VRG pilots lower-carbon surfacing on NI repairs

Following the severe winter weather that has accelerated defects across parts of the road network, VRG Resources has begun using an enhanced planning and materials approach on selected resurfacing and maintenance works — aiming to reduce disruption on site while supporting the wider industry push toward lower-carbon delivery.

With the Department for Infrastructure indicating additional roads funding efforts in response to weather-related deterioration (building on the £30m package announced before Christmas), contractors across Northern Ireland are under pressure to deliver repairs quickly, safely, and with stronger long-term performance.

What we did (example project)

On a recent local resurfacing scheme, VRG piloted an “efficiency-first” method of delivery designed to cut site time and improve consistency of finish:

  • Tighter sequencing (deliveries, plant movements, safe access routes)
  • Improved preparation (repairs, regulating, clean tie-ins)
  • Temperature/compaction discipline (to protect long-term performance)
  • Material choice review with a view to lower-carbon options where the specification allows

This aligns with the wider direction of travel across Ireland toward climate adaptation, resilience, and lower-carbon solutions in roads delivery.

Why it matters right now

Across the island, road authorities and industry bodies are putting greater emphasis on:

  • Climate resilience (surfaces that can cope better with more frequent severe weather)
  • Lower-carbon construction approaches in public procurement
  • Practical innovations like reclaimed asphalt / cold-mix approaches being trialled by local authorities in Ireland

Site-first, safety-first

As always, VRG’s priority remains safe delivery:

  • Clear working zones and site controls
  • Clean pedestrian/vehicle segregation where required
  • Tidy close-out at the end of each shift
  • Short, practical communication loops with client teams

“In busy environments, the difference is the basics done well — safe setups, tidy prep, clean tie-ins, and a finish we’re proud to stand over.”
